Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems includes all of the ways that an individual communicates besides using spoken words. AAC is everything external to speech that helps someone with complex communication difficulties communicate and participate in their home and community. This can include sign language, gestures, writing, pictures, or high tech devices such as iPads or other speech generating devices. “Augmentative” supports can add to, or supplement, spoken communication. “Alternative” supports can replace spoken communication. Research has shown that AAC can help an individual communicate more effectively AND it does not limit the potential for spoken communication.
ABLE Health providers are well versed in evaluation and treatment for AAC. To find out more information, contact services@able-health.com.
